As we progressed down the steep ravine above Palmer
Canyon, I felt comforted that at least the llamas had sure footing. Yanaqui and
White Shadow, our two faithful companions, had traversed the meadows, streams,
and rocky crags, had weathered snow storms and high mountain passes. As we
approached the fertile, almost tropical valley at the base of Palmer Canyon,
Palmer Creek greeted us with its ancient water-smoothed boulders and gentle
babblings. This was truly another of those inexplicable magical moments on the
trail. It was all so perfect. As we confidently crossed the ambling stream and
followed the trail on the other side, we fought wellings of panic as the trail
ceased to exist. No worries, just follow the creek to New Fork River. The next
few hours, Yanaqui and White Shadow led the lost over downfall centuries thick,
across the newly formed raging river, until finally the trail appeared as if
never lost. Heroes they were, our four footed friends.....
Our llama expedition was one of the most
incredible trips of our lives. From the moment we met up with our "llama
trainer" at the trailhead to when Albert met us when we came out at New Fork
Lake, Yanaqui and White Shadow were incredible companions. Even when we were at
Penny Lake and Yanaqui managed to outwit his lead rope and come undone, the
trailhead training we received taught us to not panic and just bring out the
"cookie jar". Sure enough, Yanaqui was back on his lead rope without a hassle.
They are absolutely magnificent animals. We hope to make this an annual
endeavor. Thank you Albert and Sondra for a trip of a lifetime. May we have
many more!
